I often get asked about the best ways to style a room to suit your taste. You may have picked a basic design style for your whole home, but each room has its own purpose and character within that overall style. When arranging each area and selecting materials, decorations, and accents, it's a good idea to keep in mind how the room will be utilised and by whom.
Home décor should represent your unique preferences and hobbies, but it should also take into account the purpose of the rooms in question.
I absolutely love putting together ideas for rooms and accessories for furniture pieces, especially for some of my glorious statement vintage cocktail cabinets and quirky sideboards. If you’ve not had a go at this before, you might like to get a peek into how I do mine? There are, of course, many ways to play around with them.
How I like to do it…
I start with a story in my head, as this goes right back to what was emerging when I designed the piece. For “Fanfare”, just that, you can almost hear the piece announcing itself with a triumphant flourish of gold and Art Deco decadence. “Alchemy” conjured up something more basic and elemental but nevertheless, bathed in the magic of earth and metals.
Starting with the early story themes as inspiration, I collect images and elements, challenging myself to think outside of the creative box and find more styles. You can use just about anything, photographs, designs from magazines, illustrations, colour pallets or even fabric swatches, textures and descriptive words…anything which helps you communicate your story…images can be so powerful in painting that they picture something in a way that words alone couldn’t achieve.
I think about which colours to pick out, adding in contemporary accessories for a unique twist, and mixing textures, and then tying it all up into a coherent story, so it’s quirky but makes sense somehow. At least, I think that’s what goes on in my head! I’d love to hear how you choose and style your spaces, and which of the rooms you’d choose?
Please do let me know your thoughts on how you choose a special style for a spectacular space.
